Hampi The site
of the capital of Vijayanagara(1336). It is known as Pampakshetra, as pampadevi
temple is on the banks of Tungabhadra. There is Badami Chalukya temple,
Virupaksha temple of Chalukyan times. The rocky hilly area with Anegundi
to the north of the river is identified as Kishkindha of Ramayana times.Hampi
has Krishnaswamy temple, Vithalaswamy temple, Irugappa's Basti called Ganigitti
Jinalaya, Uddhana Virabhadra temple, monolithic Narasimha which is 29 feet
tall installed by krishnadevaraya in 1529, and a large number other temples
and monuments.
Foreign visitors who visited during 15th and 16th centuries has called
it bigger than Rome. The city was destroyed and deserted in 1565.
