Remedial Treatment(Massage)

Massage is the transmission of energy in the form
of motion, or  of motion with pressure, from whatever source derived,
to the organism or its  parts -which energy, blending   physiological
processes, shall aid in carrying  them forward to perfection, that is,
to the condition called health.

Conditions Essential For Massage

    • Whatever the nature or location of the disease( which must be chromic),massage should be apllied at such regular daily time as suit the mutual convenicence of patient and operator.Irregularity is always an embarrassment of the physiological system.Temporary illnesses, as transient fever, may cause exceptions to this regularity.
    • Massage is by no means a continuous process, extending over the whole body.Such applications might be hygienic, but not medical. It si the purpose of massage to increase and prefect nutritive activity in special designated parts, which implies unequal distribution of its processes.
    • The commencing processes should usually be at the extremities, more freqrintly the lowe4. It corresponds to the natural habit and requirements of the healthy organism.
    • The process should be brief, each requiring one or two minutes only. This more rapidly this power is drawn upon, the less he can do, and the less will the patient be benefited.
    • An interval of time should elapse between all process, at least three or four times that occupied by the process-five or ten minutes are usually necessary.During this interval the patient lies in an easy position, entirely quiet. The interval is necessary for the consummation of the effects superinduced by the preceding process.
    • The degree of force of the processes applied must be apportioned to the degrees of irratability of the different parts of the body, and must be greatest to the least irritable parts.Sensitiveness to impressions is an approximate measure of irritability.
    • It follows that parts affected by localized disease must always be approached gradually and tentatively, so as to avoid even indirectly, the production of disagreeable sensations. With the processes properly adjusted, the irritability and liability to local pain disappears as the local diseased organs are approached, and no other than agreeable sensations are evoked by the processes.
    • An hour or two spent in the application of the processes, with their intervals,is quite sure to superinduce a feeling of, and a desire for, repose, which often culminates in sound sleep.
