PRECIOUS AND SEMI - PRECIOUS STONE

According to the science of gemmology a stone which has beauty, durability and rarity is a gem. Stones have stories and probably properties, known and unknown and so have remained fascinating and will remain so even tomorrow. No wonder the science of gemmology is becoming the "In - thing", and there are classes teaching this science in pune and elsewhere.
Though astrologers have their consultation bureau's advising people as to what gem they should wear for prosperity and good health, an anti - superstition society has been formed in pune and is gaining ground in and around the city.
Many facets to a gleaming and glittering stone, not only physical but also in other ways; beauty, rarity, aesthetics, value, expression of love, and enchantment. Popular gem stones are Agate, aquamarine, bloodstone, carvelian, onyx, coral, emerald, jade, jet, lapis, lazuli etc.
Green coloured malachite and other stones are also popular. Other materials like ivory, mother of pearl, tortoise shell are also valued. Gem stones are also used as birthstones. They symbolize certain qualities. They are used in the form of rings, pendants or bracelets. E.g.: The birthstone for january born is garnet and it symbolizes faithfulness.
